Roadnavier Android Head Unit — fitted in a 2009–2014 Nissan Maxima A35
The Complete Installation Guide for Your 2009–2014 Nissan Maxima A35 Android Screen — Every Trim, Every Screen Type, One Page
Identify your trim level, choose your screen, wire it correctly, and troubleshoot common issues — all without leaving this page.
The 2009–2014 Nissan Maxima A35 comes in two wiring configurations — Base Trim (non-Bose) and Bose Trim (Mid/High/Top). Base Trim owners can choose between the 7-inch Original-Style screen (retains the factory A/C panel) or the 9.7-inch Tesla-Style screen (replaces the factory A/C panel with on-screen climate controls). Bose Trim owners need to identify which of three factory head unit types they have before wiring. This guide covers every combination — identify your trim, pick your screen, follow the step-by-step wiring, and troubleshoot.
Step 1 — Identify Your Trim: Base or Bose?
Before you order or install anything, you need to know whether your Maxima has the Base (Low) trim audio system or the Bose premium audio system. The wiring is different, and using the wrong harness can result in no sound, no climate display, or non-functional steering wheel controls.
| Base Trim (Low) | Bose System (Mid / High / Top) |
|---|---|

| No Bose badge on speakers. Standard audio system. Audio routes through AUX. | Bose badge visible on door speakers or dash. Premium amplifier. Audio routes through AUX to the Bose amp. |
Check the speaker grilles on your front doors. If you see a "BOSE" logo, you have the Bose system. No logo = Base Trim. You can also send a photo of your dashboard to Roadnavier via WhatsApp and we'll confirm for free.
Step 2 — Choose Your Screen (Base Trim Only)
If you have the Base Trim, you have two screen options. Each fits differently and has a slightly different wiring process:
| 7" Original-Style Screen | 9.7" Tesla-Style Screen | |
|---|---|---|
| Factory A/C panel | Retained — physical buttons stay | Removed — climate controls move to touchscreen |
| Screen size | 7 inches | 9.7 inches |
| Dashboard look | OEM factory style | Modern Tesla-style vertical |
| Wiring steps | 4 connections | 5 connections (extra protocol wire check) |
| Shop link | Buy Original-Style → | Buy Tesla-Style → |
If you have the Bose system, skip to the Bose section below. You'll need to identify your factory head unit type (Type 1, 2, or 3).
Step 3 — Select Your Wiring Guide
Click your configuration below to expand the step-by-step wiring instructions. Only one section opens at a time — find yours and follow along.
1. Connect the Main Power & Speaker Harness
Plug the OE power & speaker adaptor into the factory connector. Make sure the connection is firm — this supplies both power and speaker signals.
2. Connect the AC Panel Harness
Use the OE AC adaptor to connect the climate control panel to the new screen. This ensures all A/C and climate control functions are displayed on the Android unit.
3. Connect the CAN Protocol Plug
Insert the OE CAN protocol plug into the decoder harness. This enables steering wheel buttons and communication with the vehicle's system.
4. Connect the AUX Audio
For Base Trim, audio is routed through AUX. Plug the AUX cable into the factory AUX port.
1. Connect the Main Power & Speaker Harness
Plug the OE power & speaker adaptor into the factory connector. This provides both power and speaker signals.
2. Connect the CANBUS Plug
Insert the OE CAN adaptor into the factory socket. This enables steering wheel controls and communication with the vehicle system.
3. Connect the AC Panel Harness
Use the OE AC adaptor to connect the climate panel to the Android screen. Make sure the white AC box is reinstalled after connection — climate controls will now appear on the touchscreen instead of the physical panel.
4. Connect the AUX Audio
For Base Trim, audio must go through the AUX port. Plug the AUX output into the factory AUX jack.
5. Check the Protocol Wire (Tesla-Style Only)
Some users report "no protocol data" after installation — this is usually caused by a loose or missing protocol wire. Ensure the green CAN protocol wire is connected correctly to the decoder box. Confirm the plug direction is correct.
1. Remove the Factory Head Unit
Use a plastic trim tool to carefully open the center console bezel. Unscrew the factory head unit and gently pull it out. Disconnect all the original plugs.
2. Connect to the Factory Harness (Type 1)
Match the harnesses as shown in the Type 1 wiring diagram:
- Main Power Harness → connects to factory power and speaker wires
- AC/Climate Panel Cable → keeps A/C display and controls functional
- CAN/Protocol Plug → required for steering wheel controls and vehicle data
- AUX Cable → routes sound to the factory Bose amplifier
Make sure every plug clicks in place securely.
3. Plug All Cables into the Android Head Unit
Before powering on, connect all ports: Main Power Harness, GPS Antenna (dashboard or A-pillar), 4G/LTE Antenna (if supported), Wi-Fi Antenna, Rearview Camera Jack, CANBUS Decoder & Jack, RCA Inputs/Outputs, USB Cables (CarPlay, DVR), External Microphone (route toward driver), and AUX Line to Bose Amplifier.
4. Power On & Test
Do not reassemble the dash until you've tested: climate display, steering wheel buttons, AUX audio through Bose speakers, backup camera, and GPS signal.
1. Remove the Factory Head Unit
Use a plastic trim tool to pry open the dash bezel, unscrew mounting bolts, slide out the head unit, and disconnect all factory plugs.
2. Connect to the Factory Harness (Type 2)
Type 2 uses a slightly different harness layout. Match each connector:
- Main Power Harness → connects to car's power and speaker wires
- AC/Climate Control Cable → keeps A/C display and control buttons working
- CAN/Protocol Plug → required for steering wheel controls and data
- AUX Cable → routes sound into the Bose amplifier
- Reverse Trigger Wire → connects to reverse light for backup camera activation
Double-check all plugs click firmly into place.
3. Plug All Cables into the Android Head Unit
Connect every required port before powering on: Main Power Harness, GPS Antenna (near windshield/A-pillar), 4G/LTE Antenna, Wi-Fi Antenna, Rearview Camera Jack, CANBUS Decoder & CAN Jack, RCA IN/OUT, USB Cables (CarPlay, DVR), External Microphone (along A-pillar), and AUX Line to Bose Amplifier.
4. Power On & Test
Do not reassemble the dash until you confirm: climate display, steering wheel controls, AUX audio through Bose, backup camera, and GPS signal.
1. Remove the Factory Head Unit
Use a plastic trim tool to safely pry open the dashboard bezel. Unscrew the mounting bolts, carefully slide out the factory head unit, and disconnect all the factory plugs.
2. Connect to the Factory Harness (Type 3)
Type 3 has a slightly different configuration but follows the same logic:
- Main Power Harness → supplies power and connects to factory wires
- AC/Climate Control Cable → retains A/C display and climate buttons
- CAN/Protocol Plug → essential for steering wheel buttons and data
- AUX Cable → sends audio to the Bose amplifier
- Reverse Trigger Wire → connects to reverse light for camera signal
- Illumination/Key Wire → required for dash lighting sync (if applicable)
Ensure every connector is locked in place and matches the diagram.
3. Plug All Cables into the Android Head Unit
Connect all ports before switching on: Main Power Harness, GPS Antenna (near windshield/A-pillar), 4G/LTE Antenna, Wi-Fi Antenna, Rearview Camera Jack, CANBUS Decoder & CAN Plug, RCA Inputs/Outputs, USB Ports (CarPlay, DVR), External Microphone, AUX Line to Bose Amplifier, and any additional ports (DVR, TPMS, 360 camera if supported).
4. Power On & Test
Test all functions before reassembling: climate display, steering wheel buttons, AUX audio through Bose, backup camera, dash lighting sync, and GPS signal.
Troubleshooting — All Trims & Screen Types
These are the most common issues after installation, regardless of your trim or screen type.
Check the AUX cable connection. For Base Trim, audio routes through the factory AUX port. For Bose Trim, it routes through AUX to the Bose amplifier. If this cable is loose, disconnected, or plugged into the wrong port, you will have no audio output. This is the #1 post-install issue.
Recheck the AC panel cable and the CANBUS decoder connection. For Tesla-Style screens, the white AC box must be reinstalled after connecting the harness. If climate data still doesn't show, verify the CAN protocol plug is seated correctly.
Confirm the CAN plug is fully inserted and the correct Nissan Maxima protocol is selected in the head unit settings. A loose CAN plug is the most common cause.
Inspect the main power harness connection and check the ACC fuse. A partially seated plug can cause intermittent or no power.
Verify the rearview camera jack (video input) and the reverse trigger wire are both connected. The trigger wire tells the head unit to switch to camera feed when you shift into reverse.
Specific to the 9.7" Tesla-Style screen on Base Trim. The green CAN protocol wire to the decoder box is almost always the cause. Check Step 5 in the Tesla-Style section above.
Place the GPS and 4G antennas away from metal parts and high-power electronics. Best positions: near the windshield or along the A-pillar.
Check the illumination/key wire connection. This wire syncs the head unit brightness with your dashboard lighting.
FAQ
Check the speaker grilles on your front doors. If you see a "BOSE" logo embossed on the grille, you have the Bose premium audio system (Mid/High/Top trim). If there's no logo, you have the Base (Low) trim.
SV and S trims are typically Base; SV Premium and SV Sport typically have Bose. When in doubt, send a photo of your door speaker and dashboard to Roadnavier via WhatsApp.
The 7-inch Original-Style screen fits into the factory head unit opening and retains your physical A/C control panel. The 9.7-inch Tesla-Style screen replaces both the head unit and the A/C panel with a large vertical touchscreen, moving all climate controls to the screen interface.
Both screens offer the same core features (wireless CarPlay, Android Auto, GPS, Bluetooth). The choice comes down to whether you prefer the factory look with physical climate buttons (Original-Style) or a modern full-screen aesthetic (Tesla-Style).
Remove the factory head unit and look at the back. Each type has a different harness connector layout. Compare the connectors against the three wiring diagrams in the Bose sections above.
If you're not comfortable identifying it yourself, take a photo of the back of your factory unit (showing all the plugs) and send it to Roadnavier via WhatsApp — we'll tell you which type you have within 24 hours.
This is the most common Tesla-Style issue. Open the back of the installation, locate the green CAN protocol wire that connects to the decoder box, and make sure it's fully seated with the correct plug orientation. See Step 5 in the Tesla-Style section above.
If the wire is connected correctly and the error persists, contact Roadnavier support — in rare cases the decoder box may need replacement.
Yes — as long as the CAN/Protocol plug and the rearview camera jack are connected correctly. The CAN plug retains all steering wheel button functions. The rearview camera jack with reverse trigger wire ensures the backup camera activates automatically in reverse.
If either function isn't working, check the Troubleshooting section — loose connections are the most common cause.
Check three things in order: (1) the AUX cable is connected from the head unit to the factory harness, (2) the AUX cable is plugged into the correct port on the Bose amplifier side, and (3) the head unit audio output is set to AUX in the Android settings.
If still no sound after all three, the Bose amplifier fuse may have blown during installation — check the fuse box.
Most owners with basic DIY skills can complete installation in 60–90 minutes using standard plastic trim removal tools. The wiring is plug-and-play — no wire cutting or soldering required.
If you're not comfortable with car electronics, any local car stereo shop can handle it. Show them this guide so they know which harness configuration to use for your specific trim.
