Can You Replace a Defender Puma Instrument Cluster Without Losing the Original Mileage?

Yes. On a compatible Land Rover Defender Puma 2007–2016, the original mileage can be synchronized to the replacement digital instrument cluster during the initial installation.

The original instrument cluster is used for synchronization, but it does not need to remain installed in the vehicle afterward.

This is the key point to understand before replacing the original Defender Puma instrument cluster.

What Happens to the Original Mileage When the Cluster Is Replaced?

For the Roadnavier Defender Puma digital cluster, a dedicated One-Time Synchronization Cable is supplied for the initial installation.

The original instrument cluster and the new digital cluster are connected during this process so supported original cluster data can be synchronized.

Original mileage can be synchronized to the new digital cluster during the initial setup.

The synchronization cable is an installation tool. It does not remain permanently connected during normal driving.

Does the Original Cluster Need to Stay Connected?

No.

The original cluster is required during the initial synchronization process, but it does not need to remain hidden behind the dashboard or permanently connected afterward.

Once synchronization is complete, the new digital cluster connects through the vehicle's original cluster connection.

The original cluster PCB does not need to remain installed in the vehicle.

Is Mileage Synchronization the Same as Vehicle Coding?

No.

For a standard compatible Defender Puma installation, additional vehicle coding is not required.

The initial synchronization is a separate installation step used to transfer supported original cluster information to the replacement cluster.

During installation:

  1. Keep the original cluster available.
  2. Connect the supplied synchronization cable.
  3. Synchronize the original cluster data.
  4. Confirm the mileage and vehicle information.
  5. Complete installation only after everything has been checked.

Do Not Throw Away the Original Cluster Before Installation

Important: Keep your original instrument cluster until the new cluster has been installed, synchronized and fully tested.

Although the original cluster does not need to remain in the vehicle afterward, it is needed for the initial data synchronization.

Will This Work on Every Defender?

This digital cluster is designed for original Land Rover Defender Puma 2007–2016 vehicles with 2.4 TDCi or 2.2 TDCi engines, including LHD and RHD applications.

However, model year alone is not enough to assume that every Defender has the same electrical configuration.

Before ordering, check:

  • Vehicle model year
  • 2.4 TDCi or 2.2 TDCi
  • A clear photo of the original instrument cluster

This is especially important for older Defenders that may have been modified during their lifetime.

The Short Answer

Original mileage: Can be synchronized during initial installation.

Original cluster: Required during synchronization, but does not remain installed afterward.

Original PCB: Does not need to remain in the vehicle.

Additional coding: Not required for normal installation on a compatible vehicle.

Confirm Your Defender Before Ordering
