How to Install a Digital Instrument Cluster on a Land Rover Defender Puma 2007–2016

Yes — the Defender Puma digital instrument cluster can be installed using the vehicle's original instrument connection. The important part is the initial synchronization process: the original instrument cluster is temporarily connected to the new digital cluster so the required original cluster data can be synchronized before final installation.

This guide covers the basic installation process for the Roadnavier digital instrument cluster for Land Rover Defender Puma 2007–2016.

The complete process can be divided into four main steps: remove the original cluster, synchronize the original cluster data, install the new digital cluster, and complete the final vehicle restart.

Before You Start

Keep the original instrument cluster available during installation. It is required during the initial synchronization process and should not be discarded before synchronization is complete.

You will use:

  • The new Defender digital instrument cluster
  • Main vehicle connection
  • One-time synchronization cable
  • USB upgrade cable
  • The original Defender instrument cluster
Important: Do not dispose of the original instrument cluster before the new cluster has completed its initial synchronization.
Step 1

Remove the Original Defender Instrument Cluster

Start by removing the trim and cover around the factory instrument cluster.

Removing the original instrument cluster from a Land Rover Defender Puma
  1. Remove the two screws from the upper section of the lower trim and remove the trim.
  2. Remove the two screws securing the lower instrument cover and remove the cover.
  3. Remove the two screws below the original instrument cluster.
  4. Carefully pull the factory cluster forward so the original vehicle connection can be accessed.

Keep the original cluster nearby. You will need it for the synchronization process.

Step 2

Synchronize the Original Instrument Cluster Data

Before completing the final installation, the new digital cluster must go through its initial synchronization with the original instrument cluster.

Land Rover Defender Puma original instrument cluster data synchronization procedure
  1. Connect the new digital cluster and the original instrument cluster using the supplied synchronization cable.
  2. Connect the new digital cluster to the vehicle's original instrument power connection.
  3. Start the engine.
  4. Follow the synchronization prompt on the new digital cluster and press the indicated button to begin synchronization.
  5. Wait until the synchronization process is complete.
The original cluster is only required during this initial synchronization process.
Once synchronization is complete, the original cluster does not remain installed in the vehicle.

After synchronization has completed, disconnect and remove the synchronization cable.

Step 3

Install the New Digital Instrument Cluster

The new digital cluster can now take the place of the original instrument cluster.

Installing the Roadnavier digital instrument cluster in a Land Rover Defender Puma
  1. Connect the USB upgrade cable to the digital cluster.
  2. Leave the USB connection accessible for possible future software updates.
  3. Connect the vehicle's original instrument plug to the new digital cluster.
  4. Position the new cluster correctly in the dashboard.
  5. Reinstall the instrument cover and trim in the reverse order of removal.

The buttons on the left side of the digital cluster can be used to operate the cluster interface and settings.

Step 4

Lock the Vehicle for 5 Minutes and Restart

After the digital cluster has been fully installed, complete the installation with a vehicle power cycle.

Final installation steps for the Land Rover Defender Puma digital instrument cluster
  1. Turn the vehicle off.
  2. Lock the vehicle.
  3. Leave the vehicle locked for approximately 5 minutes.
  4. Unlock the vehicle and restart it.
  5. Check the instrument display and vehicle information before completing the installation.

What Happens to the Original Cluster After Installation?

The original instrument cluster is used during the initial synchronization process, but it does not remain connected after the installation is complete.

The new digital cluster becomes the installed instrument cluster in the vehicle.

If your main concern is what happens to the vehicle's original mileage during this process, see our separate guide: Can You Replace a Defender Puma Instrument Cluster Without Losing the Original Mileage?

Can the Digital Cluster Be Updated Later?

Yes. The supplied USB upgrade cable should be connected during installation and left accessible. It can be used for future software or firmware updates when an applicable update is provided.
